Self-exclusion: the decision that does not depend on a support chat

Of all the protection tools, self-exclusion is the only one that cannot be negotiated. It is not a setting you can switch off on a bad evening and it does not depend on anybody’s goodwill. That rigidity is exactly its function.

What it actually is

Self-exclusion is a person’s declaration that they do not wish to be admitted to play for a defined period. Romania keeps a self-exclusion register administered by ONJN, and licensed operators are obliged to honour it. The difference from a request made to one platform’s support team is essential: the measure does not stop at a single operator’s door.

How it differs from a play break

A play break is the right tool after a run of poor sessions. Self-exclusion is the right tool when short breaks have stopped working. Both, together with deposit and time limits, are described on the responsible gambling page.

What happens afterwards

Why it cannot be lifted early

Because a measure reversible at the moment an impulse arrives protects against nothing. The declared period runs in full, and returning involves a procedure rather than a click. For the same reason, raising ordinary limits normally carries a waiting period: the deliberate delay is the mechanism, not a side effect.

The right moment

There is no official threshold. There are, however, situations where our recommendation is firm: if you are playing to recover, if you hide the activity from people close to you, if you are using money meant for other obligations, or if you cancel withdrawals already requested in order to play the balance again. Each of these on its own is enough.

Self-exclusion is not a verdict on a person and has no consequences beyond access to play. It is an administrative measure available to anybody who asks for it, exactly like a deposit limit — only firmer.

Where the official information lives

The exact procedure, the forms and the list of support services are published by ONJN and by the responsible-gambling programmes operating in Romania. We do not reproduce telephone numbers or forms here, because information of that kind is updated at source and an outdated copy in a guide does more harm than good. Our editorial method is described on the about page, and if you have an open dispute with an operator, the route is on the complaints page.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Romanian self-exclusion register?
A register administered by ONJN through which a person asks not to be admitted to play for a period. Licensed operators are obliged to honour it, which makes it stronger than an informal request to one platform’s support team.
Can self-exclusion be cancelled early?
No, and that is precisely its function. A measure that could be lifted the moment an impulse arrives would protect nobody. The declared period runs in full, and returning involves a procedure rather than a click.
What happens to the money in the account?
The balance remains the holder’s and is returned through the ordinary withdrawal procedure, with its verification. Self-exclusion concerns access to play, not entitlement to funds.
